What are good ways to take advantage/exploit the recreational players in cash games?
How do you know which players are recreational, and which ones are the regulars?
One way that I use to know a poker opponent that is recreational is through their actions is through their inconsistent bet sizing. Another way to identify them is that they don't give full attention to the game they are on. For such opponents, I just value bet thinly. The probability of them folding is very low.
Recreational players are very easy to spot by the way they approach the game. They are more relaxed and tends to handle the cards and chips loosely. They don't play like their lives depend on it. The regulars are quite opposite of the recreational! Regulars are organised and oriented about the game.
When I am on a poker table and my opponent is distracting himself or herself with other activities like fiddling with phones, I just sense that they are recreational players. I confirm it if they make weird bets. I don't use any complexity to beat them. I just bet big when a good hand comes and I check/fold when I don't get the good hand.
Live or online? I like to watch table before I join, referring to here on Stock. To me, I do not really know the difference but most regulars change up their style and the recreational players try to raise the regulars thinking their bluffing and gonna fold but it does not happen, lol. I am kinda a nit at times, aggressive, and a chasing fish if I feel good about my hand so I may be labeled recreational.
