This is a classic debate. Why do Americans call soccer when the entire world calls football, and why do American use hands when the game clearly says football? Football in America is a hybrid of European football and rugby. What do you think made this distinction?

It's because there's American football. It'd be confusing calling two sports the same name. I'm Canadian, and I also call European football, soccer.

The sport is called soccer in the United States to distinguish it from American football, which is played with an oval-shaped ball. The term "soccer" originated as a nickname for association football, which was shortened from "association" to "soc" and then "soccer".
