Should poker be considered a sport?

Should poker be considered a sport? Many argue that poker requires skill, strategy, and mental endurance, so making it a legitimate sport shouldn't be a problem at all. Others claim it's just a game of chance. Where do you stand?
 
It's as much a sport as chess, so I don't see why it wouldn't be. However, though, gambling has a bad rep, associated with a low-life culture, no offense to anyone, so it could be uphill battle for acceptance.

Anyway, jazz music was once associated with low-life culture, but now it's considered an art form (and a snobby one at that sometimes), so anything is possible.
 
The classification of “sport” can vary based on perspective. If you define it as a form of physical exertion, then it may not qualify as a sport but instead be considered a mental game. However, if you view a sport as a competitive activity that entails strategy and skill, then it certainly do the trick.
 
It’s a mind game, but I think it could be classified as a sport.

No mind games should be classified as a sport, including poker. I'd never consider chess a sport either, but there's people that play competitively.

It should be regarded as sport because poker is marked out as requiring skills, strategy and mental discipline, like other reputed sports and games such as chess.
 
In my opinion, it will not be regarded as sports because there is no physical exertion. Sports must involve physical activities. Poker is a mind game like Chess. Once there is no physicality, it is not sports
 
Anything that is regarded as a sport must demand that one stretches his body physically in the process. Poker doesn't stretch your body. It only stretches your mind and that is not a valid criteria to define a sport. Poker is no sports by any stretch of the imagination.
 
Poker is basically all about mind games and for a couple of them, I don't see them as a sport. It is just a game where you read the game with your mind with the hope that your input gives out your desired expectations.

Well, poker needs some concentrations too like sport. It's a mind game and it also requires strategy just like any other sport. You need the required capabilities and skills to triumph in the game of poker which is somewhat similar in sport.

You made valid points, but when you look at it extensively, you will notice that there are some areas of poker that makes it difficult to be categorised as a sport.
 
I think poker should definitely be considered a sport! Sure, there's luck involved, but so does golf with wind and weather. The skill, strategy, and mental endurance needed are huge. Top players consistently win over time, which proves it's not just chance. If chess is a sport, poker should be too.
