A Canadian tourist is facing prison time after being convicted of stealing a flamingo from the Flamingo casino in Las Vegas.

Mitchell Fairbairn, 34, an Ontario man, was found guilty of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges following an incident in March involving a flamingo named Peachy.

The Flamingo Incident

According to reports, security footage showed Fairbairn climbing over an enclosure at the casino's four-acre wildlife habitat before grabbing the bird and carrying it back to his hotel room.

Fairbairn reportedly described the incident as a stupid prank. He testified that he had consumed approximately 30 to 40 beers that day and claimed he never intended to harm or kill the animal.

However, a veterinarian testified that Peachy suffered injuries, including several missing feathers, broken feather shafts, and blood loss. The veterinarian also warned that grabbing the flamingo by the neck could have killed it.

Fairbairn acknowledged that he had injured the bird and said he was taking responsibility for his actions.

Facing Prison Time

Following the jury's verdict, Fairbairn faces up to four years in prison for the felony charge and an additional six months for the misdemeanor.

His sentencing is scheduled for December 1.

What do you think about this case? Was the potential prison sentence justified given the injuries to the flamingo, or do you think a different punishment would have been more appropriate?
