Erik Spoelstra is now the longest-tenured coach in the NBA
With Gregg Popovich officially stepping away from coaching to focus on his role as Spurs team president, Erik Spoelstra now holds the title of longest-tenured head coach in the league.
Here’s the current top 5 in coaching tenure as of May 2025:
1). Erik Spoelstra (Heat) – 17 years (since April 2008)
2). Steve Kerr (Warriors) – 11 years (since May 2014)
3). Tom Thibodeau (Knicks) – Almost 5 years (since July 2020)
4). Billy Donovan (Bulls) – 4 years, 7 months (since Sept 2020)
5). Tyronn Lue (Clippers) – 4 years, 6 months (since Oct 2020)
Kind of puts into perspective how rare it is for a coach to stick around in one spot these days.
