How Important Is Emotional Control Compared to Technical Skill?

If you had to choose one, would you rather have perfect emotional control with average strategy or elite strategy with poor emotional control?

Well, this is a tough question. I think emotional control is more important than the technical skill. It's possible to understand all the theory, but if you are tilting, you will lose. The funny thing is that a player who can control their emotions can beat a player with all the technical skill but poor control.

I'd probably take average strategy with strong emotional control.

Elite strategy doesn't help much if your emotional state prevents you from consistently executing it. And poor emotional control doesn't necessarily mean obvious tilt or huge punts. It can be subtle — playing too many hands after a loss, rushing decisions, becoming overly cautious, chasing losses, or simply losing focus.

That said, I don't think it's really either/or. Technical skill and emotional control amplify each other. The stronger your game becomes, the more important it is to be able to access that skill consistently under pressure.

For me, the interesting question isn't whether you ever get emotional — that's inevitable. It's how quickly you recognize that your state has changed and how reliably you can get yourself back to your A-game.

Well, I will kind of agree with all of what’s been said.
I’ve known players who start emotional swings at the tables online just to get people arguing among themselves, which throws you off your game pretty much automatically you get so involved in the table conversation you make mistakes or get taken advantage of.
And I also seen this type of play in a live game it plays out a little heavier, but it does the same thing throws you off while your game is or was I find it pretty comical watch it play out.
