It really depends on variance. Cash games can be fine with 20–40 buy-ins, but tournaments often need 100+ to survive swings. People underestimate how brutal MTT variance can be, especially with large fields and top-heavy payouts.
 
Those buy-in numbers people are quoting is no joke at all. Most of the people do not even have that kind of patience. 100+ buy-ins on tournament needs a serious discipline. I’ve seen people try it many times, swings alone will frustrate you. That’s why many people go broke, they don't plan for bad runs.
