I believe all players, including winning players, should be willing to move down in stakes when needed. Even strong players understand that variance is always present, and proper bankroll management rewards discipline over the long term.

Sticking to the fundamentals is important. If you’re on a prolonged downswing or steadily losing over a meaningful sample, moving down can protect your bankroll while giving you space to identify and fix leaks in your game. Recognizing those leaks is a key part of improving your win rate.

I also think that even above-average players benefit from strict bankroll management. It builds discipline, reinforces good habits, and ultimately helps you become a more consistent and resilient player over time.

What do you think should winning players regularly move down in stakes, or only when absolutely necessary?

I think winning players should move down in stakes when their bankroll or results no longer support the level they’re playing.
It’s not about ego, it’s about protecting long-term success. Even strong players go through downswings or tough game conditions, and dropping stakes helps reduce pressure and rebuild confidence.

Moving down does not mean that you have failed, it's just a survival move. I remembered the time I refused to drop stake, thinking that I will win always, my the bankroll nearly finished.
