Why Do Some Players Stick to One Variant Instead of Exploring Others?

Even within poker, many players avoid switching formats like cash games, tournaments, or short deck. Is this due to comfort, fear of learning curves, or belief in specialization? Do you think versatility across formats is an advantage or a distraction from mastery?

Many players stick to one poker variant because it’s where they feel most confident and experienced. Learning a new game means making mistakes again, which can be frustrating. There’s also comfort in familiar strategies, player pools, and bankroll expectations.

Maybe they don't like to explore, maybe they want to stick to a variant that they have mastered since a long time. However, I like to explore and find out if I can win by playing other variants.

Most players stick to one variant because learning new formats can your ego badly . Imagine being respected in tournaments then entering cash games and getting punished immediately. Not everybody likes starting from beginner level again.

Sticking to one variant helps you develop your skills specifically for your chosen game, which can lead to better results by focusing on what you’re good at and sticking with it. This is also why I primarily play tournaments, because I’m a strong tournament player.
